JGV Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Japality Limited (“we”, “us”, “our”)
handles information when you use the JGV (Japality Genomics Viewer)
mobile application (the “App”) and related pages at
app.japality.com/jgv/.
It is written for Google Play, the App Store, GDPR, and the CCPA/CPRA.
1. Who we are
Japality Limited
Jurisdiction: Hong Kong SAR
Email: japalitylimited@gmail.com
We are the developer of the App. We do not operate a Japality backend that receives your genomic files. Platform stores (Google Play / Apple) and, when ads are shown, Google AdMob act under their own policies.
2. What the App does with your files
JGV is a local genome browser. You choose files such as:
- Genome sequence: FASTA (
.fa/.fasta/.fna) and optional.fai - Tracks: GFF/GTF, BED, BEDPE, VCF, BAM/CRAM, BigWig, session JSON
On Android, the system file picker (Storage Access Framework) grants a one-time read. The App copies the selected file into app-private storage so the viewer and indexes can read it again without a second permission prompt. That copy stays on the device. Uninstalling the App, or clearing the App’s data, deletes it.
We do not transmit your FASTA, annotations, alignments, or session JSON to Japality.
3. Information we do not collect
We do not ask you to create an account. We do not collect:
- Name, email, or other contact details inside the App
- The contents of the genomic files you open
- Precise location for our own use
- A Japality-operated analytics or crash-reporting product
If you email us for support, we receive whatever you include in that message (typically your email address and the text you send).
4. On-device settings
The App may store local preferences (for example theme) on the device. These values do not leave the device unless you back up or transfer the device with OS features.
5. Advertising (Google AdMob)
Some versions of the App may display ads through Google Mobile Ads (AdMob), including App Open ads after launch or return to the App. When ads are not included or cannot load, AdMob does not run.
When ads are shown, Google and its partners may process, depending on region and your consent choices:
- Advertising identifiers (Android Advertising ID; on iOS, IDFA only if you allow tracking)
- IP address and coarse location derived from IP
- Device and app information, and ad delivery / interaction events
In regions that require it, a consent form (Google User Messaging Platform) is shown before personalized ads. You can limit ad personalization in device settings (Android: Google settings → Ads; iOS: Tracking / App Tracking Transparency). Declining personalization may still allow non-personalized or limited ads.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use AdMob data to build a Japality profile of your genome files.
6. Other third parties
- Google Play / Apple App Store — distribution, updates, optional OS-level diagnostics you enable on the device, and store payments if we add paid products later.
- Google User Messaging Platform — consent for ads where required.
We do not use RevenueCat, Firebase Analytics, or a Japality login in the current App.
7. Legal bases (GDPR / UK GDPR)
If you are in the EEA, UK, or a similar jurisdiction:
- Contract / legitimate interests — providing a local genome viewer and storing files you chose to open.
- Consent — personalized advertising and similar AdMob processing where required (UMP / ATT).
You may withdraw consent in device / ad settings, or by uninstalling the App. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing already completed.
8. California (CCPA / CPRA)
We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are commonly applied to a “do not sell” request for Japality-held data, because we do not hold your genome files on our servers. Advertising partners may process identifiers for ads as described in Section 5. To request deletion of any information you sent us by email, write to japalitylimited@gmail.com.
9. Children’s privacy
JGV is a scientific / bioinformatics tool. It is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 where that is the applicable age). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us by email, contact us and we will delete it.
10. International transfers
Genomic files stay on your device. If ads run, Google may process advertising data on servers outside your country, including the United States, under Google’s terms and safeguards.
11. Retention and security
Staged genomic copies and settings remain on the device until you delete them, clear app data, or uninstall. Email you send us is kept only as needed to answer you. Device security (lock screen, OS sandbox) is the primary protection for files on the phone. Do not open untrusted files from unknown sources.
12. Your rights
Depending on your region, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object, or port personal data we hold (typically support email only). Contact:
You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
13. Changes
We may update this page when the App or the law changes. The effective date at the top will change. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised policy. This version: 20 August 2026.
