Our commitment
KongWeather (iOS / Android) is developed and operated by Japality Limited. The app has no accounts and no Japality server that stores a personal profile.
In short: location is read once, approximately, only if you grant it, to match a nearby station. We do not upload coordinates or attach them to ad requests. Tracking for personalised ads happens only after you allow it on iOS. Notifications are checked only when you open the app and refresh weather.
Data we process
- Location (optional) — Only if you tap “Locate nearest station” on Home and grant While Using the App access. We read an approximate position once (about kilometre-level) to match a nearby Hong Kong Observatory station. Coordinates are discarded after matching; we store only the station name. They are not uploaded to Japality and are not attached to ad requests. After you grant location, Google ads may still use your IP or an approximate location supplied by the system. To avoid any chance of ads using location, turn location off for this app in system settings.
- Notifications — If you enable warning alerts, a local notification is shown when you open the app and refresh weather data, if HKO has a new warning or a significant / felt earthquake. The app does not check while it is in the background or closed. Content comes from HKO open data and stays on your device.
- On-device settings and cache — Language, appearance, preferred station, map layers, notification preference and weather cache stay on your device. Uninstalling the app deletes them.
- Advertising (Google AdMob) — A banner may appear at the bottom to keep the app free. Google may process advertising IDs, IP address, device and ad-interaction data. iOS shows an App Tracking Transparency prompt first. If you decline, you can still see ads, usually non-personalised. We do not sell your location or station choice to advertisers.
- Weather and map requests — Requests to HKO / data.gov.hk and Lands Department CSDI include your device network address, as with any website. We do not collect extra identifiers for this.
What we do not do
- No sign-up, name or phone number
- No background location tracking
- We do not sell your location or station choice, and we do not attach coordinates to ad requests
- No access to contacts, photos or the microphone

Transfers and access
Apart from the public weather / map services and Google ads, Japality Limited does not sell or rent your personal data. The app does not keep an identifiable account file. On-device data is cleared by uninstalling. For questions, email japalitylimited@gmail.com.
Children
The app is for the general public. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
